The Healing Journey – by Claudio N Naranjo – Chapter 5, Fantasy & Reality. Claudio C. Naranjo’s writings are the earliest writings to study the psychodynamics of ibogaine. He “was the first to compare the ibogaine experience with dreaming, the first to publish on its unique ability to allow patients to evaluate their early life experiences and to identify the nausea associated with the drug as movement related.” Lotsof.Bwiti: An Ethnography of the Religious Imagination in Africa – by James W. From Publishers Weekly: “Pinchbeck travels the earth in search of spiritual awakening through tripping, from Gabon to the Nevada desert. At happenings like the Burning Man festival or a plant conference in the Ecuadorean jungle, Pinchbeck meets “modern shamans” and tells their stories as they intersect with his… Charting his gradual transformation from a cynical New York litterateur to psychedelic acolyte, Pinchbeck uses elements of travelogue, memoir, “entheobotany” (“the study of god-containing plants”) and historical research to ask why these “doorways of the mind” have been unceremoniously sealed.” Describes his experience with the Bwiti and eboga.

Originally published (2004) in French as: Bois Sacre: Initiation a l’iboga.
Authors Description: “Iboga, spiritual ally of African shamans since antiquity, yields ibogaine, a powerful psychotropic substance. It is used mainly in Gabon and Cameroon in a secret, initiatory tradition called bwiti-nganza, in which physical and psychological illnesses can be rooted out and cured. Intense psychological conditioning that includes the rites of confession, contacting and honouring one’s ancestors and construction of an in-depth psychological inventory are all part of the initiate’s encounter with this sacred root. Like many visionary and initiatory plants, iboga is a key that gives access to other modes of being and consciousness. Despite its suppression in the West, researchers have shown that ibogaine provides a powerful adjunct to psychology due to its miraculous ability to break addictions – most notably to heroin. To the followers of the Bwiti religion, ibogaine is the indispensable means by which humans can truly communicate with the deepest reaches of their soul and with the spirits of their ancestors. This book details the traditions and techniques of iboga’s use by African shamans and the essential role it occupies in that community in order both to preserve this knowledge and to show how ibogaine may have an important role to play in our modern world.”

“In the traditional cultures described in this collection of ten essays, the hallucinogenic “trip” is a means to an end–a quest for confirmation of traditional values, for unity with the tribal ancestors. In contemporary Western society, by contrast, it tends to be an end in itself and a rejection of the society’s values–perhaps, it has been suggested, because Western drug-users tend to be a-cultural.”

“No index; no bibliography; one map; ten page glossary; two b/w photographs; numerous vignettes. More journalistic than scientific, this nicely-made book nevertheless affords a rather detailed glimpse into the secret Bueti Iboga cult of the bandjis [initiates] of Equatorial Guinea, much less studied than the better-known Bwiti cult of its neighbor to the south, Gabon. The book was made parallel to a video documentary by the author of the rites of this “unknown African secret society”.”
